23rd June – 4th NYSD at Shildon
Well done, how many of you nearly went to Darlington by mistake? Exams finished, and some athletes are looking decidedly chilled. It is always good to see familiar faces back from University. What a beautiful night, we could not have asked for better conditions, no brolly needed. The field events were the long jump and javelin. The javelin was popular, how often do you get the opportunity to throw a lethal weapon at your coach without being penalised. Glad to say they all missed, though it wasn’t from lack of trying. Several of you came along and gave it a go, some of you will be being persuaded to do it again. There was a battle fought among the senior men and personal bests achieved which caused great excitement. Friendly rivalry and encouragement was great to see. Athletics at its best. The long jump was as busy as ever as there was the opportunity for the under 11’s to have a go. Many of you ran, jumped and threw.
On the track there was the choice of 100m, 800m, 75m for under 11’s and a 5k for senior men and women. The 5k saw two of our men challenging each other for first place, ahead of their competitors. The U17 boys continued the fight of sprinters verses endurance in the 100m, but I did not see the return match in the 800m, maybe that’s for another day. Well done to all of you who came along and ignored the tennis.
The next NYSD will be on 7th JULY at Darlington.
Congratulations to Fergus Roberts and Rhiannon Allen-Ross on being selected to represent North Yorkshire at English Schools.
WEEK COMMENCING 1ST June
Flaming Hexham and the third Young Athletes League meet to be held in May. Soaking up the sunshine, swotting up on the history of medicine, eating ice creams, and applying bucket loads of sun cream were the order of the day. Athletes were nearly outnumbered by the officials. The atmosphere was one of a large family on a picnic in the park, deckchairs rocked and chocolate rapidly melted. Our athletes did us proud, they ran, threw and jumped in blazing sun. Sam gained a personal best in the shot, Paul and Carl flew in the 400m leaving the opposition standing. Sophie dug deep in the 100m and battled to the finishing line as if her life depended upon it. Freya and Mathew took on the 800m and worked their socks off. Congratulations to you all, and a big thank you to you and your families for supporting, providing labour and not getting lost. The T shirts for the previous match were won by George and Sophie. Paul and Freya were the proud recipients for today’s match. We look forward to seeing you all on July 19th at Chester-le-Street.
Two days later and here we go again, the destination a little nearer, and the third NYSD league meet. Temperatures have reduced, but the enthusiasm hasn’t. The field events were discus, high jump and triple jump. High jump proved to be very popular, several of you braving it for the first time, which was great to see. Some of you old hands returned to show what true talent you have, just believe in yourselves. Contrary to popular belief the bar does not bite.
On the track there was 200m, 1500m as well as Steeplechase. I’m proud to say that the red and white vests were very prominent, and some notable wins were recorded. Well done to you all.
It was the Seniors turn to shine on Saturday 6th June at Jarrow. From the rumours that have filtered through the women out numbered the men two to one. All those dedicated athletes that went, worked their socks off, some are still recovering. The old adage that you haven’t worked hard enough until you feel sick was tested to the full. The women fielded two teams for the relays as well as covering most of the events. After brave performances they managed to avoid last position, no mean feet, with only three men, and only one of those was a senior so they were restricted as to the number of events they could do. Hopefully more men will be there on the 5th of July at York.
1st NYSD Track and Field event Eastbourne.
The athletic season has arrived and what a week we have had. Tuesday saw us testing our waterproofs and wellies in Darlington. Spectators huddled under the canopy determined not to venture out. Well done to those brave souls who took part. Despite the weather there were some very good performances and personal bests were achieved on the track and in the hammer, shot and high jump. A sprinter threw down the gauntlet and took on the endurance runners in the 800m’s, a close challenge, but on this occasion it was not meant to be. Who knows by July, when we have warm still evenings ,the spike may be on the other foot, or will they have peaked too soon?
Saturday saw the seniors sunning themselves in York. Having gone up to division three there was some trepidation as to whether anyone would turn up, and whether they would be out classed. Encouraged by jaffa cakes, cajoled by jelly babies and boosted by bananas the team were ready to face anything! Fears were allayed and our athletes were impressive on the track and in the field. We were more than capable which reflected in our third place. More athletes, and who knows, we could easily have been in the top two. So all you over 17s, Jarrow is calling.
Sunday, sun still shining, and we are heading north to Monkton Stadium and the first match of the Young athletes League. We are in a group of seven teams so plenty of good competition. Congratulations to all those who put off their Sunday roast to compete, act as taxi service, act as cheer leaders, bag carriers, or frisbee finders ( the new way to achieve a super flat stomach) I hope Charlotte found her first competition memorable. Sophie will no doubt still have sore arms on Tuesday after her encounter with the shot and those who saw Rosie and James do the high jump will not forget in a hurry. James cleared his own height much to his and our amazement. George and Fergus both showed a clean pair of heels in the 1500m. While George, Thomas, Sam and Karl gave a master class in how a 4 by 400m should be run. Paul continues to excel in the long jump and Emma was certainly not going to be upstaged by big brother. All the hard work paid off and we finished the day in a fabulous fifth position. Well done and thank you to all that took part.
What a week! We’ve waded through water, and had to rummage to locate the year before lasts bottle of sun cream. Well done to all who competed, there have been some remarkable achievements!!!!!!
REMEMBER YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU.

May 20th
Another busy week for athletes, some of you jogged on down to Sheffield on either the Saturday or Sunday, some of you liked it so much you went both days. It is always an ideal opportunity to suss out the opposition and gain a good bench mark at the beginning of the season. Gold medals, personal bests, sweat and holes in knees were evidence of the hard work put in.
Tuesday, and the second NYSD at Darlington, fortunately without the rain. The slight hiccup was the omission on the timetable of the senior men’s javelin; this was attributed to a typing error, and still went ahead, but with a smaller turnout. Those of you who are regulars should have had faith in the system and realised you would not have been neglected. For those not wanting to throw there was the opportunity to jump instead. This was the first outing for the under 11s. The men’s three thousand meters produced a sea of red and white, and all were cheered on until the last one crossed the line. The 400m proved to be a nail bighting occasion as the endurance runners again took on the sprinters, this time there was nothing in it, to be fair several had run already that day. Not that they would want us to make excuses for them.
Sunday, YAL at Shildon, fortunately not too early a start so some of you were able to grab a lie in, and some of you just forgot to get out of bed. The sun shone and the wind gusted, and it was only as the relays were being run that it started to rain. Well done to all of you who performed so valiantly, knowing that you would have to compete in the areas the next day, and that with so few athletes there was no way you could have fought your way out of last place. This year, for each of the matches we have been given two tee shirts to be presented to two athletes who have gained a grade, a personal best, or done really well in an event they do not normally do. Fergus and Rosie received them from the last match, so watch this space, it may be you. Fraya, well done on your first outing, I hope you enjoyed it. Rosie was again a star in the high jump, as was Paul in the long jump. Fergus tackled the 400m with style and George battled in the 800m with Mathew, while Carl sprinted till he ran out of puff. Sophie was spoilt for choice, 1500m, 3000m, 800m, 300m hurdles, to name but a few were all turned down. Different events were tried, times chased, and success was for the taking, which our gallant group of athletes did, each and every one was a winner!!!
